Definition:

Harem is a type of anime and hentai genre that involves one of the following:

  • Multiple women chasing one guy.
  • More than one woman having sex with the same guy simultaneously.
  • One man being married to multiple women.
  • A single MC unable to decide between “which” girl he wants or likes.

Essentially, despite the MC being nothing special, women fight for his attention and even fight each other as a result of jealousy and other emotions.

While harem anime are cliché at their core and widely unrealistic, there can be very good writing among harem anime (or hentai) when it counts.

History:

The modern harem genre began to take a recognizable form in the 1990s with the rise of anime series like “Tenchi Muyo!”

This series effectively combined science fiction and romance, establishing many conventions associated with harems.

This continued in the 2000s with shows like Love Hina, famously, and To Love Ru, which spawned multiple seasons and content.

Eventually, shows like High School DxD, High School Of The Dead, and many others carried the genre further.
